wow! another weekly reflection behind schedule? yes, that’s exactly what this is!
this week we took a look at a video lecture by Dr. Irvine, which discusses open learning and multi-access learning. from this lecture, there are 5 questions that ill be answering below!
- What does this mean?
“Program Delivery: The cohort will include face-to-face instruction in courses taught in a centrally-located Vancouver site, and flexible, blended formats that mix onsite and online learning.”
this old trap; blended format. i haven’t actually taken a course with this tag, as to me, its not truly clear on its intentions; do i need to be at campus, do i not, or is entirely up the the professors discretion? it feels that way, which means it might as well be tagged as face-to-face, and not get the hopes up of people who truly need to be remote. - Can you think about a case where a learner was unable to access education due to a modality or inflexibility in learning design?
What were the obstacles?
What was the outcome? (minding confidentiality)
throughout my entire time at uvic, id say a grand 90% of professors post all their notes, all lecture content, everything online, and fair few even record their lectures and post them to brightspace. yet, there are the few professor that squeak through in that 10%. i myself have fallen victim to a prof not posting any notes or lecture content on days where i’m sick, or just don’t have the energy to make the commute to class. like i said, almost all my classes this hasn’t been an issue but a select few have been, which makes it hard to be human, and miss a class here and there. as for an outcome, i just missed out on content, and had to figure it out! - What percentage of learners do you think prefer as their FIRST choice:
F2F
Hybrid
Multi-Access
Online
Offline
i believe in the it was said that 9 out of 15 class members (~60%) put multi-access as their top choice. i would say i agree. i prefer being able to attend lectures either way, be it on campus when i can, or on zoom if not. it makes things much easier, and takes a lot of the stress of commuting off; i do think however think things like examinations and the like should be kept in the classroom. - What do you think is the FIRST choice mode for learners in the following groups?
Disability/Chronic health. -> f2f
Caregiving. -> online
First Gen. -> f2f
Working. -> f2f
First Year. -> f2f
Pre-College/Adult Grad. -> f2f
Rural. -> online
Indigenous. -> online
English as an Additional Language -> f2f
International. -> f2f
2SLGBTQIA+ -> f2f
all of these answers were taken from the lecture video! - What do you think is the future of modality in education (or learning in your discipline)?
i study computer science, and for me, this feels like a hard decision. currently there’s a pretty obvious shift in where the discipline is going; toward AI use, but i don’t think that means things should change really, the best thing to do, would be to enforce proper multi-access learning, and refine it. i believe that to be true for all disciplines!
overall a pretty interesting week! not much to reflect on here, as most of my thoughts are shared throughout!
